Is second-generation Apple Pencil compatible with an older iPad?
Best answer: No, the second generation Apple Pencil does not work with older iPad Pro models; however, you can still buy the original Apple Pencil.B&H: Apple Pencil ($99)
Can't support new features
The new features of the second generation Apple Pencil aren't designed to work with the older iPad Pro models. A prime example is a way each Apple Pencil charges.
The original Apple Pencil charged via the Lightning connection, which is hidden under the cap, and you would plug it into the port of your iPad Pro to charge it up. The new Apple Pencil automatically pairs, physically connects (via magnets), and wirelessly charges from the side of the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro and 11-inch iPad Pro.
With no magnets on the side or wireless charging in place, the older iPad Pro models can't make use of the new Apple Pencil.
Older version still for sale
The good news is if you're looking for the older version of the Apple Pencil, it's still available! The old Apple Pencil works with the following iPad models:
- 12.9-inch iPad Pro (second generation)
- 12.9-inch iPad Pro (first generation)
- 10.5-inch iPad Pro
- 9.7-inch iPad Pro
- 9.7-inch iPad (6th generation)
The Apple Pencil for older iPads
While it may not have wireless charging, the original Apple Pencil still has amazing touch, and pressure sensitivity that makes using it has a drawing tool on any iPad a breeze!.
