What you need to know

  • A new report speculates about a new Apple Store opening in Berlin, Germany.
  • Construction at a location in the city resembles that of other Apple Store builds.

Apple appears to be closing in on opening another Apple Store in Berlin, Germany.

As reported by ifun.de (translated by Safari), it appears that Apple may be working on its second retail location in Berlin at Rosenthaler Straße 43–45.

This location is part of a restoration of old buildings, a project that was originally expected to see completion by the end of 2020. Obviously, that has not played out.

However, the speculation that Apple could settle in the eastern part of the capital directly on Hackescher Markt has been with us for several years. These were last loud when the Hamburg project developers of VALUES. Real Estate (at that time still DC Values GmbH) announced in 2018 that several GDR old buildings will be demolished on Rosenthaler Straße and then a tripartite new building with office, residential and business shares would be built at the vacant position. The new building should actually be completed by 2020.

The project was apparently delayed and now appears to be on track for completion later this year.

However, the completion of the major project, which is located with an area of 10,000 square meters directly in the Berlin barn district between Hackeschem Markt, Sophienstraße, Neuer Schönhauser Straße, Weinmeister- and Oranienburgerstrasse, was then delayed and now seems to be heading for an opening in the late current year.

As you can see from the photo above, the dark privacy screen and tall glass windows are quite reminiscent of modern Apple Store designs which only adds to the speculation that the location will in fact be a new retail location for the company in the city.

The fact that it will not be long before the new tenants move into the shell is illustrated by the black wooden cladding, which now completely conceals the huge shop window fronts in the middle of the three buildings. An unusual privacy screen that has already been sighted on other Apple construction sites. The large glass fronts, which range (well recognizable in the 3D renderings of the executing project developers) from the ground floor to the second floor of the neighboring buildings, are also clearly reminiscent of Apple's store aesthetics.

Apple has not confirmed if the location will in fact be a new Apple Store. If it is, it will be the second in Berlin, joining Apple Kurfürstendamm.
