The Book of Unwritten Tales 2: Everything you need to know
Having been released on just about every other platform available since 2015, The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 is finally out on Nintendo Switch as well, bringing another classic point-and-click adventure to the system. Though the genre traditionally thrives on PC, the Switch's handheld capabilities make games like this an excellent choice for relaxing or playing in short bursts without worrying about reaching checkpoints or losing skill in between play periods.
The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 is full of puzzles, references to other fantasy series and games, and has solid writing from creators of multiple other similar successful adventures. It takes between 20-25 hours to complete, making it a fairly robust adventure for its genre, and one worth your time if slow-paced puzzlers like this are a genre you love or want to explore.
What is The Book of Unwritten Tales 2?
The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 is a point-and-click comedy adventure that was released in 2015 on PC and has since been brought to multiple consoles. The game features four playable characters that make a return from the previous game: Wilbur (a gnome mage), Nate (a human who is very full of himself), Ivo (an elf princess), and Critter (a strange...critter!). The four work together to stop a strange force that is taking over the land of Aventasia and transforming a normal medieval environment into a strange, cutesy one.
Do I need to have played the first game?
Not necessarily. Though there are some consistent threads between the two games and main characters return, the story is standalone and will give you enough background info to go off of without having to play the first game. That's a good thing, too, as The Book of Unwritten Tales is not currently available on Nintendo Switch - only its sequel.
How do you play?
The primary gameplay of The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 is exploring and puzzle solving. Though on PC this game is considered a "point-and-click," on Nintendo Switch you'll be moving a character around with the stick and examining interesting things that you find. You'll want to look into anything and everything to find switches, items, interactable objects, and pieces of information that will help you progress through Aventasia. You'll also need to break down items into their basic components at times to use those to form new things you can use in helpful ways. You'll have to use all the information available to you, along with logic and experimentation, to progress and eventually save the kingdom.
There isn't much else to it, but The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 prides itself on its strong writing and good humor, and it's simply stuffed with easter eggs. If you enjoy witty games without a lot of pressure to accomplish feats within time limits or using complex button combinations, this is an excellent adventure to partake in.
