Even if you bought a new iPhone a year ago, this year's model may just be too much of a good thing to pass up. If that's the case, then here's how to get rid of your old phone and upgrade to the next best thing.

How to purchase your new iPhone XS

Ready to buy your brand new iPhone? There are a few different routes to take, but the best option for buying unlocked is to buy straight from Apple's site.

This is important if you want to keep photos, videos, messages, and more, because you'll be wiping your old iPhone before selling it or trading it in. If you want to keep the contents of your old iPhone, here's how:

If you're planning on keeping your older iPhone, then skip this step. But if you are going to be getting rid of it, then there are important things to do before selling it, trading it in, or giving it away. You must sign out of absolutely everything, including iCloud, iMessage, iTunes, Find My iPhone, and any other accounts you have on there.

Then you'll want to completely reset your older iPhone, content, settings, and all. That way, you're not leaving any personal data on there, and the person you're selling it to (if that's the route you're taking) has a clean slate to work with (and can unlock the phone without a code or anything like that).

Once your device is prepped and ready to leave your hands for good, there are a few ways to get rid of it. You could trade it in directly to Apple, sell it online, or simply give it away. You'll want to first make sure you transfer all your data to your new iPhone, and then you'll want to look at how you want to sell or trade in your old one.
