I'm-a gonna win
Mario Kart Tour is free-to-play, but there are also optional in-app purchases. There are two forms of tender in this game: coins and rubies. Both can be earned by completing courses and cups. Certain characters, karts, and items can be purchased by rubies and others by coins.
Rubies specifically can be spent to increase the number of coins you see in the Coin Rush course, or to "fire off a pipe," which gives you a random item, kart, or character. It costs five rubies to fire off a pipe once or 45 rubies to fire off a pipe 10 times. Coins, on the other hand, are used to purchase specific items, karts, or characters in the shop. The things you can buy with coins really depends on what's available in the shop that day.
Packs, Passes, and Daily Selects
Every two weeks a new set of packs become available for purchase. Packs typically include a driver, star tickets, and several rubies. To purchase these packs, you will need to pull out your wallet since you cannot buy them with in-game currency. There's also the Gold Pass, which costs $4.99 per month and gives you better gifts for completing cups, allows you to earn gold badges, and unlocks 200cc races. You'll typically also find a Value Pack that only costs $1.99 and gives you a few item tickets, star tickets, and rubies.
Additionally, each player will find a Daily Selects section in the Shop menu. Here you'll find several karts, gliders, and drivers available for purchase in the shop each day. These options switch out every 24 hours and are only purchasable via coins. You should also be aware that the character, karts, and gliders that show up in the Daily Selects section are different for each player.
If you don't have enough coins to purchase the items or characters you want, you can always spend money to buy rubies and then use those rubies to pay to race on the Coin Rush course, which helps you gain several coins in one go.

As with many other mobile games, this one has the incentive of login-in bonuses. You can earn coins or rubies depending on the reward for the day. If you wish, you can also add more rubies to your account by spending real money. Rubie purchases are as follows:

Can I play this game without spending any money?
Yes, the game is designed in such a way that you can play without dipping into your wallet. We're happy to report that there is no stamina system that requires you to pay money to continue playing for the day. That being said, certain special items are only available via purchase, and it might take longer to unlock the specific cars or characters you're eyeing without spending money. Still, you can get by without making any transactions.
